Hiisijärven hiekat

Ristijärvellä, Kainuussa, on mielenkiintoinen paikka nimeltään Hiisijärvi.

Kiintoisaksi paikan tekee se, että järvi humpsahti pieneksi yli 250 vuotta sitten. Hiisijärven pintaa oli alettu laskea vuonna 1746 kaivamalla järven päähän laskuoja.

Keväällä 1761 koko järvi karkasi. Vesimassat ryöstäytyivät ja jättivät jälkeensä paljastuneelle kuivalle maalle kalat ja muut veden elävät. Veden pinta laski 14 metriä. Veden karkaamisen myötä paljastui 9800 hehtaaria maata.

Entinen järvenpohja on hiekkaista maata, eikä hiekka vaikuta ihan tavalliselta, vaan se on erittäin hienoa hiekkaa. Näitä hiekkarantoja jopa kutsutaan Kainuun Rivieraksi.

There is in Ristijärvi (belong to the region of Kainuu. Wikipedia) an interesting place called Hiisijärvi (Hiisijärvi in English: Lake of Goblin). It is an interesting place, because the water ran away from the lake over 250 years ago. In year 1746 the farmers dug a small ditch. Their purpose was to lower the level of the lake. 

The farmers were not aware of that the water flow caused ridge erosion. Suddenly in the spring 1761 almost all of the water ran away from that lake. This disaster lowering 14 meters the level of the lake Hiisijärvi. In this big disaster no one died. Flowing water destroyed many buildings, one mill and one tar-making place.

Under the water revealed 9800 hectares of new land. The former lake bottom is sandy land and it is very fine sand. These sandy beaches even called Kainuu Riviera. Unfortunately I couldn’t find the English language pages of this disaster.

Tässä muutama kuva viime toukokuulta. Vanhankaupunginkoskella lokit saalistelivat kaloja. Lokit ovat kauniita lintuja ja taitavia lentämään. Alla kuvassa vedessä näkyy myös hyppäävä iso kala.

Kevät tuo tullessaan muuttoparvet. Lintuverkossa jaettiin kiva linkki sivustoon, jossa voi testata omaa kykyä laskea lintuparvista yksilömäärät:

Minä laskin testin kaikkiin parviin liian alhaiset lukumäärät, kuten yleensä teen myös tässä tosielämässä. Vaatii paljon harjoittelua vielä.

Here are a few photos from last May. The Gulls are on the Vanhankaupunginkoski rabids, Helsinki. There are also one big fish in the water in that first photo. The Gulls are beautiful birds.

Spring brings the migratory flocks. Now is good time test the bird counting skills. Here is one test:

In that test I always count too low numbers as I usually do also in real life. I need a lot of practice…

Lintuja ruokitaan

Kotini lähialueilla on ainakin kymmenkunta paikkaa, missä ihmiset ruokkivat lintuja. Olen niin iloinen, kun lintuja ruokitaan. Alla eilen ottamani kuva eräältä ruokintapaikalta.

Keltasirkut nokkivat maasta ruokaa.

Eilen oli aurinkoinen päivä ja viherpeipotkin lauloivat.

In the surrounding areas of my home are at least 10 place, where people are feeding birds. I am so glad about that. Yesterday was sunny day, so I took some photos. Birds are a European Greenfinch and one Yellowhammer (and, of course, there is also one Great Tit).

Lehtopöllö - kohtaaminen

Eilen illalla oli upea kokemus, kun tulimme autolla pihaan. Astuttuamme autosta, se kuului heti. –Onko tuo pöllö vai huutaako joku lapsi jossakin, minä kysyin. Seisoimme liikkumatta kuunnellen ja sitten se jälleen alkoi. –Pöllö, se on pöllö!

Lapinpöllö. Great Grey Owl.

Pöllö lauloi lähellä ja koko kävelymatkan kotiovelle kuuntelimme sitä. Kotona menin heti pienen tovin päästä parvekkeelle ja kyllä, pöllö edelleen huhusi. Ja, samalla kuulin, että sille vastasi toinen pöllö ja sekin oli lähellä. Eikä mennyt kuin hetki, kun kaksi pöllöä lensivät parvekkeeni editse vastapäisen talon katolle. Siinä ne olivat noin 50 metrin päässä. Näin toisen pöllön upean siiven, sen siiven kuvion ja siiven pään pyöreyden. Pöllöt olivat siinä alle minuutin ja lensivät pois. Vielä hetken kuulin niiden huhuilua kauempaa.

Kaksi lehtopöllöä siis. Upea, upea kotiinpaluu, kun pöllöt sillä lailla tulivat tervehtimään! Todennäköisesti ne olivat pariutunut pari. En ole koskaan aiemmin tällä paikalla kuullut ja nähnyt lehtopöllöä. Nyt odotukset ovat korkealla, josko ne pesisivät jossakin lähellä.

Kuvituksena vanhat kuvat hiiripöllöstä, lapinpöllöstä ja sarvipöllön poikasesta. Lehtopöllöstä minulla ei ole kuvia – vielä.

Yesterday evening was very awesome! We come home and yet as we got out of the car, we heard it. –Is that voice of owl or is it yelling child, I asked. We stood motionless and listening to – and then it started again. –Owl, it is owl!

The voice of owl was very near and we heard it all the time when we walked to the door. In home I went to the balcony, and yes, the owl still sang very near my home. And I heard that another owl replied to the owl that we first heard. So, I heard voice of two owl! And suddenly these two owl flew in front of my balcony. They flew to the roof of building which is opposite of my house. They were about 50 meters away from me. I saw the great wing of the another owl. The owls were there in less than a minute and then they flew away.

They were pair of Tawny Owl. I have never before heard or seen Tawny owl so near my home.

Now expectations are high: do they nest somewhere near my home?

Photos are my old photos of Northern Hawk-owl (Surnia ulula), Great Grey Owl (Strix nebulosa) and very young (just baby) Long-eared Owl (Asio otus). I don’t have photos of Tawny owl – yet.
